BMW X6 Exterior
Look at the X6 and one will notice the striking new colour. The deep sea blue hue on our test car is one of the many new shades that are on offer. But apart from that there are quite a few additions and modifications made to the 2013 model. In terms of styling, the front end receives a new refreshed face, the headlamps are sharper and the kidney grille is slightly different. There’s also an optional full LED adaptive headlamps on offer as well as new shape corona rings that give the X6 a completely different character especially when the sun goes down. The front bumper is all-new and houses a different air dam and fog lamp. Like in every updated X model, the fog lamp is repositioned, in this case sitting higher than before. No changes have been made to the sides, the only change being newer design alloy wheels that are sporty and go well with the X6’s character. The rear also gets a new design tailamp with LEDs but nothing more has changed.
BMW X6 Interior
Step inside and you are welcomed by a trademark BMW cabin. The dashboard has horizontally been split into three parts. The upper half is black leather wrapped, the lower half gets an off-white treatment and splitting the two are slats of piano black and wood. The interior and the door trims are also optionally available in American Oak, Fineline Stripe, Fineline Pure, or Poplar Grain fine-wood trim fine-wood trim. The off-white materials used in the cabin gives it an airy feel. The seats can be adjusted electronically making it easy to find the right driving position and comfort. There is a fair bit of space at the back too but due to the centre arm rest and the air con controls, seating three at the back won’t be the most comfortable affair. Surprisingly, despite the coupe roofline, the low seating means there is quite a bit of head room even at the back. For those planning to go on a long family vacation need not worry about boot space. With the seat back upright the 2015 X6 makes 580 litres of space. Moreover the rear seat can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split thereby expanding on storage space.
BMW X6 Performance
This is possible due to the use of two turbochargers that work in sequence. On the road, power delivery is seamless and the new 8-speed automatic transmission helps the X6 hit the ton in just 6.4 seconds, that’s 0.1 seconds quicker to the claimed figure and a whopping 2.2 seconds quicker to the older model. Top speed is a claimed 236kmph, we managed to touch 229kmph in our test. Roll-on figures are way quicker now and passing cars is effortless. Fuel efficiency has also gone up. In town, the car returned 8.1kmpl and 12.2kmpl on the highway, an increase of 0.8 and 2.2kmpl respectively over the 2012 xDrive30d. The new X6 is available in two packages, Innovative and Luxury. The updated X6 is also available with a petrol engine in the form of the 407PS xDrive50i with a new 8-speed auto transmission.. In terms of frugality, this large sized beast isn’t very good, that said the mileage numbers are insignificant.
BMW X6 Driving
The 2018 BMW X6 has four driving modes – EcoPro, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. Toggle though any of these modes and the powertrain and the chassis dynamics are altered accordingly. The Sport and Sport Plus modes are for those looking to push the car to the limit. Slot the car in one of these, and the steering weighs up nicely, the dampers stiffen up and the engine revs higher as well. Show the 2015 X6 a series of bends and you will be surprised how confidently it takes them on. You don’t really feel the 2-ton weight of the car lugging you around while into a corner. For your everyday drives in town there are the EcoPro and the Comfort modes. In these modes the Adaptive suspension offers a plush ride quality over potholes and undulations. However, due to the low profile tyres and the large wheels, the bigger bumps still seep into the cabin. While the stock setup provides comfort, the settings can be individually adjusted using the Driver Experience Control too.

BMW X6 Conclusion
The success that BMW achieved with the first X6 took a lot of experts by surprise, especially considering that there are a lot of options available at that price. The Munich-based car maker has been smart to give it timely updates. Given the size of the car it handles fairly well, the engine is an absolute delight and then it won’t break a sweat when driven on a muddy field as well. But while the 2018 X6 isn’t going to stir a revolution like its predecessor, it is an evolution, one in the right direction we must say.
