Mahindra Verito Overview

Gallery One of the most unheralded of cars on the Indian market has been the Renault / Mahindra Logan which was supposedly the French car maker’s gambit to do a low priced emerging market car. While the aim was laudable and the car immensely practical and having major strengths all around, it however came at a time when the Indian consumer was waking up to style and convenience and didn’t want plain jane stuff. In fact, the deliberate method to play down style was very apparent in the Logan and sadly tripping on this one singular count meant that so many shunned what was intrinsically a very very good car. It didn’t help matters then when Renault and Mahindra couldn’t agree on a new joint venture to take their partnership forward and this disagreement saw Mahindra taking over the Logan project completely. Of course the plant at Nashik produces the car but not its drivetrain and the supply agreement with Renault stands intact for the project which is pretty much an attribute of the vehicle.

It was evident that the car needed a make-up and the first thing Mahindra did once they had this car in their eco-system was to begin to give it a makeover and the first thing to do was change the name and the identity the car had acquired. Logan was out in favour of the Verito and though the bit of badge engineering got things off the ground, not much could be read into it till the first major face-lift which is both stylish and also functional with most of the strong points remaining intact.

Mahindra Verito Exteriors

The objective behind the making of Logan sedan was to present it as the most affordable car in the European market. This is the reason why the design of the sedan was boxy without any curves and creases that would have increased the cost. But ever since Mahindra took the control of the car and rebadged it after separating from the joint venture, there have been multiple changes. The new Verito gets fresh front fascia with new Mahindra grille along with revamped bumper design.

The looks have been enhanced with the chrome radiator grille housing slanted vertical slats with Mahindra badge embossed on it. The eyebrow shaped headlight cluster houses the powerful high intensity halogen lights with levelling device which helps the driver get better view of the road at night. The hood now features prominent strakes and chrome giving the car a more appealing stance. The side profile gets roof rails that seem to be hugging the body and the blacked out pillars which are now part of Mahindra’s new design philosophy. The small ORVM have been replaced by a large set in the newer version. The rear profile features the same crispy theme as that of the front. What is more interesting is that the quality has been upped by notches. The redesigned tail lamps and bumper has reduced the visual bulk and the way those crispy creases emerge from the bootlid and merges with the tail lamps add more to the overall appeal.

Mahindra Verito Interiors

The first thing that you notice as soon as you get into the car’s cabin is space and openness. It is the best that Verito has to offer in terms of interiors, the two rows of seats offer ample amount of leg, head, and shoulder room. The insides have been embellished with much more refined features highlighted by dual toned dashboard and a brilliantly arranged instrument panel. The car carries capacity to comfortably accommodate five adults without making anyone feel claustrophobic.

The upholstery and plastic are of better quality in all its variants. The rear seat is large and wide and offers ample comfort along with head restraints. The central console is presented with different offerings such as black paint, or cubicle painting depending over the version. The instrument panel is well organized along with a large glove box that can store lots of things. There are several other storage cubicles such as parcel shelf, door pockets, a large boot space of 510-litres, mobile holder, bottle holder, and a few others interesting holes where you may comfortably place your small belongings. Apart from all these features, the sedan has been bestowed with several advanced comfort features that help in giving it a upmarket feel. For more info on Verito visit Vci-india

The dual toned instrument panel features an efficient ait conditioner along with a heater that helps keeping cabin temperature comfortable as per weather. Along with these, the car features ample number of comfort aspects like an integrated CD player, USB port, Aux-in port, FM Radio, electronic ORVMs, in-cabin theatre dimming lights, bright light in boot space, power steering, power windows, passenger side vanity mirror, central door lock, gear knob with solver finish, and so forth. With availability of all such features Mahindra Verito seems a complete package of comfort and convenience and ensures a comfortable drive experience.

Mahindra Verito Transmission

That said, the engine and transmission is a proven and reliable combination delivering adequate thrust with pocket soothing returns on the mileage delivered. Power is there as and when you want, where you want and that too with a rather frugal drinking habit. There is excellent fuel economy for the taking even for a throttle happy person like me. Capable of cruising all day long at 110-120km/h, it also helps that the car has very precise yet easy steering with excellent feedback and when you couple this to the ride quality and the good stability it affords through corners and such given its performance, it makes a very compelling argument for consideration.

The Verito sedan earlier featured two engine options; the 1.4L MPFI petrol and the 1.5L dCi CRDi diesel engine. However, due to poor response the petrol powered Verito was discontinued a few years back. Now the only option remains is the diesel engine which is borrowed from the Logan. And remember, this is the second most popular diesel engine after Fiat’s Multijet.

The engine produce 65PS and 160Nm of max torque, mated to 5-speed manual transmission. The motor doesn’t hesitate at low revs and traversing within the traffic is quite easy. The engine now feels smoother and well insulated while erratic and heavy clutch in the previous model now feels lighter and progressive. However, once you cross the 3500 rpm, the power fizzles out and the ideal way is to shift the gear up and remain in the power band. Somehow, the shifts on the gearbox are a bit of disappointment following its rubbery nature. However, the gear ratios are bang on and the car pulls fairly. Overall, the performance has been improved as compared to what we have seen in the earlier model.

Mahindra Verito Driving

The ride is pretty firm when compared to its competitors. But it also means the Verito can take the bad roads well. The car is sturdy and keeps the rattles and vibrations in control. The rear seat comfort is the USP among its rivals. It offers good legroom and headroom than the near competitor Dzire. The third passenger in the rear is welcome in the Verito. The cabin is pretty well silent till 100 kmph. After that the engine becomes noisy and harsh. The steering gives a positive feeling and gives great control at speeds. The typical diesel characteristics like the gear lever vibration are absent which is a good thing.

Mahindra Verito Safety

The braking power is adequate and you will not lose confidence. And with anti-lock braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution on board, rest assured you have command over the road ahead. Mahindra should have upped the bar in the safety department looking at what competition is offering. Only the top end model comes with driver airbag and ABS with EBD which is a dated approach by the carmaker. However, other variants do get features such as central locking, child proof lock, anti-theft engine immobilizer, adjustable front and rear head restraints, rear defogger and prismatic day-night inside rear view mirror.
