Maruti Suzuki Dzire Overview
Unabashedly, Maruti Suzuki DZire has been the country’s best-selling sedan ever since its launch around five years back in 2012. It has been clocking sales in excess of 12000 units on an average basis per month, which is way more than the combined sales of all its competitors. However, with time, the sedan started losing its charm and shine, while the sales also witnessed a gradual dip. Henceforth, in order to retain the good old days and reclaim the glory, Maruti Suzuki has brought the all-new DZire sedan with fresh styling, updated cabin and increased mileage. The sedan is offered in both petrol and diesel fuel trims in four trim levels: LXi/LDi, VXi/VDi, ZXi/ZDi and ZXi+/ZDi+.
Underpinning the lightweight ‘HEARTEC’ architecture, borrowed from the Baleno hatch, it is available with AMT gearbox with V grade onwards in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. Maruti Suzuki Dzire Design
Forget purists, even the most design-illiterate would have cringed a bit at the original Dzire’s gawky looks – the over-raised stance, the slapped on boot at the rear, the near upright A-pillar with its out-of-place black out sticker and the unconcealed association with the Swift’s design. The assumption back then seems to have been to use the Swift and its raging popularity to pull in the buyers for the Dzire. But, the compact sedan has, over the nine years since launch, grown into its own and is currently the biggest seller in the segment. So, it was time to break away and give the Dzire its own unique character and appeal. In fact, that is the reason why Maruti has dropped the co-branding with Swift and launched the Dzire before the new generation of Swift makes it to our shores early next year. So, for the 2017 Dzire, designers and engineers at Maruti Suzuki decided to start with a new platform for a change.
The fifth generation Suzuki B-Platform and its stiffer, but lighter, Heartect chassis forms the base on which the new Dzire is built (shared with the Baleno). The new Dzire is almost 85kgs lighter with increased use of ultra and high tensile steel. This has helped improve the Dzire’s fuel efficiency and ride quality; more on that later. But, the new platform has also helped create a fresh face for the Dzire. Most importantly, it has enabled this compact car to look much more like a real sedan. One of the key changes is the lowering of the height and stance of the car. The overall height of the car is now 40mm lower, the roof is lower and the ground clearance is now 163mm instead of the earlier 170mm. The design includes a gradually raked and sloping A-pillar and C-pillar making the new Dzire look so much more like a sedan from the side profile. The only spoiler in that new mix is the boot which is still stubby when viewed from the side.
But, the Dzire’s design is now much less upright and much less like a cab-forward hatch. The lines and curves around the car are now softer and smoother. Given the increased width – up by 40mm; and the wider track, the new car’s proportions seem much more sedan-like. The shoulder line is also lower, gelling with the design language and enabling a larger greenhouse (glass area). The front of the Dzire now gets a dominating, wide new grille with four horizontal slats and thick chrome lipping with subtle curves highlighting the bonnet width. Large headlamps that merge with creases on the front fender are framed by chrome fins below the fog lamps, and offer a fresh new face to the Dzire. Auto LED projector lamps and daytime running lights (DRLs) are offered in the top trim ZXi and ZXi+ variants only. 15-inch dual tone alloys and the new door mirrors are the features that you’ll notice when the car is viewed from the side. At the rear, the tail-lamps also get LED lights and sport a completely new wraparound form and combination. With a raised, spoiler-like edge for the boot lid and a chunky chrome strip connecting the two tail-lamps, the rear now looks wider and proportionate. It is still stubby and the sub-four-metre connection is still most evident here.

The inside of the car is fresh and make you feel that the vehicle is built around you, irrespective of your sitting location. The beige and black theme is the same but the design is fresh. The design of the dashboard is also new and fashioned so carefully in order to make maximum space for the front passengers. There is a healthy dose of wood on the dashboard, steering, and the door armrest.
People who own the previous model wouldn’t find much difference in the plastic quality. The instrument cluster is white-backlit, while the chunky steering wheel and how the infotainment is tilted towards the driver, will make you feel like home. The seat of the driver is comfortable with better cushioning and provides enough under-thigh support and side bolstering. There is ample room for the height adjustment as well. The rear seats are the place where you feel the most special, thanks to the new platform which makes the seats utterly spacious.
The carmaker has upped the game into the comfort department with the car getting rear ac vents and 12V charging socket in the middle. Further, you also get center armrest, bottle holders in both the doors and 2 cupholders. The 7-inch SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment is familiar and responsive. Other features in the car include automatic climate control, keyless entry, engine start/stop button, electrically adjustable ORVM, steering mounted audio controls and automatic headlamps. Maruti Suzuki Dzire Performance
The new Dzire carries over the same two powertrains from the previous generation. So, it is the same 1,197cc VVT petrol engine and the 1,248cc DDiS diesel engine with their 5-speed manual gearboxes. The powertrains get changes to their calibration and the automated manual transmission (AMT) makes an appearance in the Dzire. The AMT which we have seen in smaller Marutis is still the same basic tech involving sensors and hydraulic shifters mounted on top of the manual gearbox. The AMT’s relatively unrefined shifting characteristic is also, unfortunately, a carry-over. Unlike a torque converter or continuously variable (CVT) auto transmissions, AMTs tend to have prominent shift shocks during heavy acceleration. But, the head nodding pull during up shifts eases up during cruising speeds. Kick downs to lower gears when I stomp the throttle for an overtake maneuver also tend to be less urgent, but at slower speeds there is a double shift down from overdrive gears. With a lot of low-end torque being available, the diesel AMT was easier to use overall. Buyers have to be aware that the AMT tech is oriented towards optimising mileage in city driving cycles and so there is a certain inevitable performance compromise.
The petrol engine in the Dzire produces a peak power of 61kW at 6,000rpm and peak torque of 113Nm at 4,200rpm. This is a quiet, refined engine with its performance being an ideal combination for all types of driving cycles, My personal preference would be the manual transmission for both the petrol and diesel engines, but with more and more buyers preferring AMTs Maruti is now offering three trim variants each with the automated gearbox. The Dzire’s diesel engine delivers 55kW of power and 190Nm of torque. Peak torque is available from 2,000rpm. This common rail direct injection engine’s familiar character means that driving it in a Maruti is somehow always more pleasurable than in any other brand’s cars. It does get a bit raucous at high revs, but if you are a driver that loves to be connected with the car, this engine will keep you amply engaged.
All-New Maruti DZire is more fuel efficient than the preceding model due to the use of ‘HEARTEC’ platform as it makes the sedan lighter by 70-80 kgs than before. The petrol variants deliver a mileage of 22kmpl with both manual and AMT variants, while the diesel variants return 28.40kmpl in both manual and AMT models. Maruti Suzuki Dzire Riding
Maruti has managed to make the suspension setup work quite silently. And this can be seen in compliant ride quality and neutral road behavior of the car. All-New Maruti DZire is priced in a range of Rs. 5.45-9.41 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, New Delhi) in the country. The perfect amalgamation of stellar pricing and best-in-India mileage makes it the hot favorite car in the segment with a plethora of striking and advanced features on offer. The exterior styling is something out-of-the-box and the availability of AMT gearbox with almost every variant makes it one heck of a car, which could eat up even the sales of premium hatchbacks and compact SUVs.
New Suzuki Dzire is offered in 14 different variants. In terms of pricing, it is tagged a little higher than the outgoing model.
