Nissan Micra Overview

While the Nissan Micra’s cutesy looks might not go down too well with all buyers, its interior is more universally likeable. The cabin feels airy and is quite spacious for a small car. The flat and low rear seats sadly take away from the comfort score. Everything is well put together but there’s also a lightness to the build.

The Nissan Micra automatic comes with a 77hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine coupled with a CVT gearbox that offers great convenience in the city, but makes the driving experience quite dull. The Micra diesel’s 64hp, 1.5-litre motor, offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox, impresses with its quietness, linear power delivery and excellent fuel economy. Though easy manoeuvrability is a Micra strongpoint, you’ll also have to live with the car’s clunky ride.

Nissan Micra Design

The front profile of the 2017 Nissan Micra looks aggressive with the V-shaped grille and heavily sculpted bonnet. On the side, you will notice a strong crease waving across the length of the car. The black C-Pillar gives a floating roof styling to the hatch and the alloys look fantastic. The rear has a racy design thanks to the fancy LED tail lights.

As mentioned above, the new Nissan Micra exterior has not received any change, save for the new integrated turn indicators on the outside rear view mirrors and a rear spoiler on the top-spec petrol-CVT variant. Apart from these changes, the hatchback retains all the styling elements from the preceding model. It gets auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and other external features offered with the previous model.

Nissan Micra Cabin

The interiors of the new generation Nissan Micra are a big step up from the previous car. The layered dashboard looks very premium with a colourful tone of orange sandwiched in between. The 3-spoke steering wheel looks familiar to the Nissan 370Z. It also gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre console with 6-speaker Bose system.

Some of the fancy features include Lane Departure Prevention, Intelligent Braking with pedestrian recognition, Intelligent Around View Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition, High Beam Assist and Blind Spot Warning. It also offers Active Ride Control and Active Trace Control for better ride and handling.

Nissan Micra Engine

The Nissan Micra specifications remain unchanged. That said, the hatchback continues to derive power from the 1.2-litre petrol engine with maximum power output of 76 bhp against peak torque of 104 Nm. Diesel variants, on the other hand, come equipped with a 1.5-litre oil burner with 63 bhp and 160 Nm peak torque. It gets a standard five-speed manual gearbox along with an optional CVT. Powered by the 1.2-litre petrol engine, the Nissan Micra mileage is rated at 19.34 km/l as per the tests done by the ARAI. The more frugal diesel-powered Micra, on the other hand, is claimed to return an impressive fuel economy of 23.08 km/l, which is around 4 km/l more than the petrol version.

Nissan Micra Riding

Nissan has softened the suspension for a smooth ride over the treacherous road conditions we are subjected to. Light steering means the car is nippy and is easier to manouvre through city traffic and a turning radius of 4.65 meters only helps. Handling is sharp but the tires give up soon and spoil the show. The top variant we tested was equipped with ABS and BA (braking assist) and though the ABS and BA kick in instantaneously, the puny 165/70/14 tires tend to lose grip on hard braking. A tire upgrade is sure to sort this out. Brakes are responsive with minimal play. Overall, commendable ride and handling.

Nissan Micra Safety

The new Nissan Micra features ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum units at the back. Safety features on the Nissan Micra 2018 include standard dual frontal airbags, driver’s seat belt warning indicator, standard rear parking sensors and speed warning.

Nissan Micra Verdict

The tweaks to 2018 Nissan Micra are strictly restricted to features update. While the dual airbags are now standard across the range, the ABS and EBD are missing in the base trim. Overall, it is now a better package than before.
